Homegrown vegetables - the story so far!

We had some success last year with homegrown vegetables in our first attempt - potatoes, spring onions, lettuce and carrots.  Spurred on by this success, my husband has been more ambitious this year and has planted an array of salad vegetables and other delights in our garden.  We're starting to see some results now!

The seedlings that have lined the windowsills in almost every room in the house (for what seems like months!) are now ready to face the big bad world outside.  These ones are cucumbers, tomatoes, peppers and chillies.  They'll join the bigger tomato plants in the greenhouse as they are for now until they're ready to be moved into bigger pots.  A job for the weekend provided the weather shows some sign of improvement!

In our containers we have strawberries, lettuce, spring onions and beetroot.  We've also got an abundance of radishes in the greenhouse in a container, too.  The strawberry plants are really taking off now and I'd be delighted if we got fruit from these!  We love strawberries in this house and it would be fantastic to have a go at making some jam of my own - I've never tried to do so before!

The lettuce has been a success again this year and we're now harvesting this regularly!  With all the barbeques last weekend, it was great to have fresh, homegrown lettuce to hand!  It's fantastic to see the enthusiasm from the children when it comes to our homegrown "produce" - they are so keen to be involved in the process of planting and growing food, and so much more enthusiastic about eating salad and vegetables when it's "their" homegrown endeavour!

We've also got carrots and parsnips in the "patch" in the ground, although nothing to report from there - yet!

As disappointing as the weather has been this week after the glorious sunshine we've been enjoying, I daresay the showers have had a positive effect on the garden!  I couldn't help but notice when I was driving home yesterday how green everything looked!  Despite the grey, overcast sky and the drizzle in the air, the leaves on the trees and bushes as I drove past looked so green and vivid and alive!  It reminded me that even though the weather has been a bit dreary this week, we're still in our summery months, and should be making the most of it!

Best Wishes
Debbie
